The Monokini

Friday, May 21st, 2010

It’s not really a bikini, but it’s not really the usual one-piece either.  The monokini is somewhere in between, designed for people who either didn’t know what they wanted to wear or are taking baby steps to wearing a bikini.  It’s a little odd at first glance, but I give kudos to the designers for making them stylish and fashionable.  I suppose if you’re concerned about wardrobe malfunctions with the bikini, the monokini assuages those fears.  But I always wonder about the tan lines that come with this style.  I mean, they can’t look good.  But at least you can look good while wearing it.  Has anyone tried the monokini yet?

The C-String Bikini

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

As if it wasn’t enough that there are now teeny tiny micro bikinis available, someone’s gone one step further and created the C-string.  It’s kind of a misnomer because, as you can see, there are no strings.  This skimpy bikini bottom is shaped like a C (kind of) and has nothing keeping it in place but some strategically placed adhesive.  I’m not sure if this is designed for one-time use or if you can launder and re-glue.  So ladies, is this new C-string something you would consider?  Or is is too extreme for your tastes?  I think I’d be too paranoid about the little thing falling off or floating away in the water.  Best for me to stick to strings and straps.

Asymmetrical Bikinis

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Asymmetrical designs have been common all over the fashion scene: asymmetrical hems, single shoulder tops, asymmetrical buttons, slanted zippers, etc.  Really, it’s a design style that’s become pretty popular.  When it comes to swimwear though, this design trend is kind of hard to do, and apart from the one shoulder bandeau, it’s never really been done.  Until now.  The tops may remain symmetrical, but the bottoms have a whole new look.  It’s as if the designer couldn’t decide whether to make a regular bikini bottom or a string bikini and said “To hell with it – I’ll do both!” Because really, that’s what it looks like.  And while I give kudos for creativity, the unbalanced look of this design kind of has me tilting my head saying “huh”.  I do applaud the colors though – they’re beautiful.

The Teardrop Bikini

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

OK so maybe the micro bikini CAN get smaller.  This is the teardrop bikini, named so after the shape that the patches of material kind of resembles.  There’s nothing terribly functional to this suit – wouldn’t recommend trying to catch a frisbee while out at the beach in this thing.  But I suppose it’s a good option if you’re just laying out and people watching.  Or if you prefer to get watched by people.  So if your inner exhibitionist is dying to get out, I suppose this skimpy little style is the right bikini for you.

New Bikini Top Style

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

We’re all familiar with the triangle top, halter top and strapless bandeau styles of bikini tops.  Pretty much every bikini you see out on the beach is one of these three.  Happily, every now and then a new style comes out that catches our attention.  Yay for change!  It kind of looks like a halter that was put on wrong, doesn’t it?  But I like the  keyhole effect in the center that’s created by the crossing straps.  Aside from the interesting tan lines you’ll get, what do you think of this new style??

Do the polka!

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I wore my fair share of polka dots when I was little.  Polka dot skirt, polka dot sneakers, polka dot backpack, even a polka dot headband (I was 8, don’t judge).  Now that I’m no longer a wee one I wonder about these fun little dots.  Where have they gone?  Are they no longer allowed to be worn over a certain age?  I can’t remember the last time I saw anything polka dotted in the stores, so I had to smile when I came across this multi-colored multi-dotted bikini.  Certainly there are occasions where one must dress appropriately (think job interview or church) but when it comes to swimwear, I believe that you should wear something fun.  After all, you’re out at the beach to have fun and frolic right?  So the same rule applies.

Fun, funky and unique

Monday, April 5th, 2010

I’m all for individuality and being unique.  I believe that in a world with over 6 billion residents, we each have to do a little somethin’ somethin’ to stand out from the rest of the crowd.  So ladies, when it comes to standing out from the rest of the beach-goers or pool-side tanners, what would you do to stand out and get noticed?  One of my friends swears by donning a cool hat, because really, how many people do you see seaside sporting a hat?  But let’s focus on swimwear: what cool and unique look do you look for when you shop for a suit?  Or if you’re tired of the same old, same old, would you want to rock a style like the one below or something even more distinctive and unusual??

Crochet Monokini

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

With all things in fashion, styles evolve and trends come and go.  One of the fairly newer things on the swimsuit scene is the crochet bikini.  This style has been around for a few years but hasn’t really picked up for the obvious reason: it’s, well, crochet.  Bikinis are usually made of Lyrca or spandex, the fun stretchy material that clings and fits.  Crochet, however, is a knit and I imagine these kinds of suits are a mix of appropriate materials but one has to wonder, does a suit like this wear well when wet?

The monokini (along with the tankini) is one of the latest styles spawned by the bikini.  It’s a suit that’s part bikini and part one-piece maillot.  No doubt beautiful designs with fantastic embellishments have been made in this style, but I have to wonder if anyone really wears them.  I image that spending any amount of time in a suit like this results in peculiar tan lines (especially this one with the crochet design), and if you’re sitting up does the front panel droop out?

Undoubtedly, it’s a sexy suit with the peek-a-boo top and Brazilian bottom but I’m still hesitant to throw it on.  Would you venture to wear it the next time you go on vacation?

Bikini or lingerie?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

We all know what lingerie looks like, and we all know what bikinis look like, but is the line defining the two starting to blur?  At first glance this mauve masterpiece looks like lacy lingerie but slowly a question mark starts to form overhead and you realize it is, in fact, a bikini!  I love the details, the color, the ties but I wonder if it’s the type of bikini that you’d actually want to wear in the water.  As beautiful as it is, I’d likely not want to ruin it by swimming around in salt water or chorine.  What about you? Would you splash around in this two-piece wonder or just model it while tanning in the sun?
